 Last year in October several CedarStone Bank employees attended an evening class offered by the Tennessee Bankers Association. The class was entitled “Opening New Accounts in Tennessee”. The presenter, Laura Wilson, a representative of Pegasus Educational Services, LLC, based in Louisville, Kentucky made several key points that hit home with CSB employees.
When Wilson covered “Minor Accounts”, she discussed how many people today are financially illiterate, not only adults but children as well. Wilson explained financial knowledge begins when we are children. She went on to say there are several ways to educate children – class time in schools, Boy Scout troops, Girl Scout troops, community groups, etc.
When Girl Scouts were mentioned, Tina Winfree, Sr. VP and Operation Manager of CedarStone Bank immediately thought of the banks relationship with Cathey Sweeney and the Wilson County Girl Scout organization. “I thought this was a great way for our bank to work with kids in the community through the Girl Scout program,” Winfree explained.
After several meetings with Sweeny, local Girls Scouts of America Membership Manager, and Lebanon Office Manager Lisa Brown and Kristin Howard, Mt. Juliet Office Manager, the program was born.
Girl Scout Daisy’s Banking Day was held on Tuesday, April 12 at the Main Office in Lebanon. Young Girl Scouts learned some basics of banking including opening a new account, being friendly to customers as well as honesty and being fair. After completing the day’s agenda, the participants were presented with the official CedarStone Bank patch to add to their sash.
“We had a great day and the girls truly enjoyed it and learned something about banking,” Brown concluded.
